20 Years and 36 Hours in Milwaukee

I wish I could take credit for today's New York Times article in the Travel section, "36 Hours in Milwaukee." It discusses modern Milwaukee and all that is happening in this city -- which by the way, Marie Claire Magazine ranks as the "Sexiest City" in the U.S.
The article explores things to do and places to stay and recommends two very fine hotels in town, The Pfister and the Hilton Milwaukee City Center. Both are Falk Group clients and both are very deserving of the attention. I would have also suggested the InterContinental, but I didn't write the article. http://travel.nytimes.com/2008/10/05/travel/05hours.html
Had I written the piece, I would have pointed out that 20 years ago, Milwaukee had little going on. I was straight out of college and found a job at the Milwaukee Journal, which brought me to Milwaukee. But there was not a lot for a 21 year-old with little discretionary income to do -- no coffee houses, no outdoor dining -- just a lot of bars.
Fast forward 20 years. I would say that Milwaukee is not only aging gracefully, but has developed a whole new hipness to her that visitors and the media are noticing. Hats off to those who have made this happen, including former Mayor Norquist for the RiverWalk and to the MMAC for its business initiatives, and to companies like the Marcus Corporation, Manpower and Harley Davidson for their investment in the city and its people.
